Abstract:

Objective

To investigate the expression of absent in melanoma 2 (AIM2) and serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in patients with colorectal cancer and its clinical significance.

Methods

118 cancer tissues of colorectal cancer and 50 normal tissues were collected from Liaoning Cancer Hospital from January 2010 to March 2013. The expression of AIM2 in colorectal cancer tissues was detected by immunohistochemistry. Clinical and pathological parameters and serum CEA levels were retrospectively collected. The correlation between AIM2 expression level and serum CEA level in cancer tissues was analyzed by correlation analysis, and the relationship between the two indicators and clinicopathological parameters was analyzed. Kaplan-Meier method was used to analyze the survival of different AIM2 and CEA levels.

Results

There were 42 cases of AIM2 overexpression in 118 and 39 cases in normal tissues. The difference was statistically significant; Preoperative serum CEA positive rate in patients with colorectal cancer was 44.07%(52/118). Spearman grade correlation analysis showed that AIM2 expression in colorectal cancer tissues was negatively correlated with CEA expression in serum (r=-0.660, P<0.001). The depth of invasion, TNM stage and lymph node metastasis were related factors affecting the expression of AIM2 in cancer tissues (χ2=4.847, 7.794, 3.961; P<0.05); the size of tumors, TNM stage and differentiation were related factors affecting the level of serum CEA before operation (χ2=17.14, 5.779, 5.293; P<0.05). K-M survival analysis showed that the survival time of AIM2 high expression group was significantly longer than that of low expression group, the preperative survival time of CEA negative group was significantly longer than that of positive group, and the survival time of AIM2 high expression+ CEA negative group was significantly longer than that of AIM2 low expression+ CEA positive group, the difference was statistically significant.

Conclusion

The expression of AIM2 and serum CEA in patients with colorectal cancer may be related to the progression of colorectal cancer. Combined analysis of the two indicators is helpful to evaluate the prognosis of patients with colorectal cancer.
