Qualitative research of patient′s perioperative psychological experience after miles operation with colostomy

Abstract:

Objective

To discuss the role of qualitative research in patient′s perioperative psychological experience after miles operation.

Methods

Patients were enrolled from Cancer Hospital of Harbin Medical University from March 2014 to September 2014, who were diagnosed with low rectal cancer and planed for miles surgery and permanent colostomy. Application of qualitative research method to understand the patient′s experience of anxiety and fear.

Results

This qualitative study shows that besides perioperative common psychological experience, patients after miles operation also can appear inner anxiety, the fear and upset due to the changes of physique and defecation function.

Conclusions

Qualitative research is very helpful for patients′ confidence established during perioperative stage and recover stage. Also is very helpful to improve self-care ability in the future for patients with permanent colostomy.
