Treatment strategy of massive defects in patients with rectal cancer after abdominal perineal resection

Objective

To explore the strategies and methods of repairing the perineal soft tissue defect after rectal cancer operation.

Methods

By the multidisciplinary treatment discussion, axial pattern skin flap was adopted to treat the patent with vagina defect because of rectal cancer resection. Island gluteal musculocutaneous flap was adopted to treat the patient with recurrent rectal cancer and vesicoperineal fistula.

Results

The patients recovered well. There were no perioperative morbidity and mortality.

Conclusions

The colorectal surgeon should organize a multidisciplinary team according to individual condition. Appropriate flap transplantation has satisfactory effect for giant perineal defect because of rectal cancer operation.
