Abstract:

Objective

To investigate the expression level of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) or somatostatin (SS) in serum of patients with chronic constipation and its influencing factors.

Methods

Patients were enrolled from October 2016 to February 2017 in Department of Healthcare, Qingdao Municipal Hospital, including patients with chronic constipation 48 cases, 31 male patients and 17 female patients, mean age was (70.0±12.7) years old; And total number of 37 patients without constipation as a control group, including male patients 24 cases and female patients 13 cases, average age was (64.4±9.0) years old. Enzyme -linked immunosorbent assay was used to determine the content of 5-HT and SS in the serum of the patients. The measurement data with normal distribution was presented as ±s, and the comparison between groups were analyzed using the t test.

Results

The expression level of 5-HT in serum of patients with chronic constipation (23.30±6.57) pg/ml was significantly lower than that of control group (29.61±9.49) pg/mL, the difference was statistically significant (t=-3.624, P=0.001); the expression level of SS in serum of patients with chronic constipation (20.82±5.96) pg/mL was significantly higher than the control group (16.92±6.47) pg/mL, the difference was statistically significant (t=2.886, P=0.005); The expression level of 5-HT in serum of patients with chronic constipation of different ages (t=-0.762, P=0.450), different gender (t=-0.907, P=0.369), and different clinical symptoms as abdominal pain (t=0.894, P=0.376) 、abdominal distention (t=-0.711, P=0.480)、defecation effort (t=-1.534, P=0.132) 、defecation incompletion (t=1.339, P=0.187) was no significant difference (P>0.05). And the expression level of SS in serum of patients with chronic constipation of different ages (t=-0.694, P=0.491), different gender (t=-0.028, P=0.977), and different clinical symptoms as abdominal pain (t=-0.095, P=0.925) 、abdominal distention (t=0.546, P=0.587)、defecation effort (t=-1.391, P=0.171) 、defecation incompletion (t=0.110, P=0.913) was no significant difference (P>0.05).

Conclusion

The expression level of 5-HT and SS in serum of the patients with chronic constipation have some characteristics. Gender or age and clinical symptoms are no significant influence with the expression level of 5-HT and SS in the serum of the patients with constipation.
