Abstract:

Ovarian metastases are uncommon in women with colorectal cancer (CRC) and harbor poor prognosis. Due to less sensitivity to systemic chemotherapy of ovarian metastases compared to extraovarian metastases, oophorectomy in the comprehensive treatment of CRC deserves further study. This study reviewed researches on oophorectomy in the comprehensive treatment of CRC and summarized form two aspects including ovarian metastatectomy and prophylactic oophorectomy. Retrospective researches had shown potential survival benefits from optimal ovarian metastatectomy in CRC patients with ovarian metastasis, but randomized prospective trials are urgently warranted. Because of the low incidence of ovarian metastases from CRC, prophylactic oophorectomy in colorectal cancer surgery was not recommended by some researchers. However, strictly selected patients with clinical findings suggestive of ovarian micrometastasis might obtain survival benefits by prophylactic oophorectomy, which deserves further study.
