Abstract:

Objective

To investigate the diagnostic value of endorectal ultrasonography in rectal tumors with sterile coupling gels filling the rectum.

Methods

Sixty patients with rectal tumors underwent endorectal ultrasonography with sterile coupling gels filling the rectum. The ultrasound findings were compared with histological diagnosis.

Results

There were 8 patients with rectal adenoma, 40 patients with rectal cancer and 12 patients with rectal stromal tumors. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and accuracy of endorectal ultrasonography for rectal tumors was 7.27%, 100%, 100%, 94.2%, 95.0%, respectively.

Conclusion

Endorectal ultrasonography with sterile coupling gels filling the rectum is a valuable diagnostic method for rectal tumors and to provide reference for clinical management.
