Abstract:

Objective

To evaluate the safety and clinical efficacy of single balloon enteroscopy(SBE)for diagnosis and treatment of small intestinal diseases.

Methods

Data of the patients who underwent SBE from January 1, 2012 to Jane 1, 2014 were retrospectively studied to analyze the access, procedure time, endoscopic diagnosis and complications of SBE.

Results

A total of 157 SBE procedures were performed on 138 patients.Procedures were performed via oral, anal and the combined routes in 77, 80 and 14 cases, respectively.Lesions were found in 99 cases, and the disease detection rate was 71.7%(99/138). The average access times via oral and anal routes were 45.5 min and 50.3min, respectively.Patients showed normal vital signs during the procedures. No such procedure-related complications as cadiovascular events, severe abdominal pain, bleeding or perforation, were observed.

Conclusion

SBE is a safe and highly clinically valuble method for diagnosis and treatment of small intestinal diseases. With the accumulation of the clinical experience, SBE would play a greater role in the diagnosis in the small intestine.
