Relationship between smoking and perianal abscess: a case-control study

Objective

To explore the relationship between smoking and perianal abscess.

Methods

Regressively analyse the smoking history of the 230 patients who were clinically diagnosed as perianal abscess in the XinYu People's Hospital from from 2009 to 2011.220 patients who were clinically diagnosed as perianal non-abscess in the same period were selected as the control group.

Results

Of the 230 perianal abscess, there were 172 smokers, accounted for 74.8%; there were 90 smokers in the perianal non-abscess patients, accounted for 40.9%.There are significant differences in smoking history between the two group(P<0.05)

Conclusions

Both mild and severe smoking are risk factors of perianal abscess.
